1. IMPORTANT: Among the many outrages in Helsinki, Trump appears to have bought (or been suckered) into providing fuel to Putin's animus for former US Ambassador to Russia Mike @McFaul. The Administration needs to kill this outrageous proposal before it gets any legs.

7. The WH &
@SecPompeo need to shut this down now. Immediately. They need to make clear that there will be no cooperation with Putin's transparent intel op disguised as mutual aid to parallel investigations & no exposing@McFaul or other USG officials to Russian questioning.Show this thread -
8. This issue could not be more serious. Putin's political opponents often wind up dead. The idea of a former US officials being questioned, arrested, or, God forbid, harmed by Russia needs to be rejected forcefully by the Administration. Today. END

And what happens when they charge, incarcerate, torture, and refuse to release them? Trump does not stand up to Putin. Why would we entrust them with our own? This is INSANE

But can Trump even do this? Force a former US Amb who has done nothing wrong and is now a private citizen to meet with Putin's investigators? I would have to believe constitution would prevent this but I so agree WH needs to shut this ludicrous idea down.

One can argue that this sort of defense putting faithful patriots like
@McFaul on the same level as Kissinger or Cheney is offensive. Protective norms without Red Lines which remove such protection make a mockery of our collective values.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

<THREAD> In addition to the many political, ethical, and human-rights arguments against handing over American citizens like
@McFaul to a foreign power with whom no extradition treaty exists, ... -
it would be a complete denial / undermining of the state system, part of which is the mutual guarantee of diplomatic immunity.
-
It would represent a ceding of our identity as a country, a much worse example of Trump's non-response to the attack by Turkish thugs on protesters on public property in the capital. <\THREAD>

Hey
@RepNewhouse: Trump can't turn over US citizens for interrogation for "spurious 'investigations' of our adversaries." It's ridiculous that people are having to clarify this for GOP members. We need more than poodles n pizza dough from you now. Also, where are the kids? Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

This is completely outrageous. But let's note--the government has no way to compel a private citizen to answer questions of a foreign government, anyway. All Putin could do was charge people and seek their extradition. And that would provoke an insane court battle.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders so easily said "he's checking with his team and will let you know", as if it is business as usual. Everyday we have a dictator asked for us to turn over an ambassador, right? They may as well just hoist the Russian flag above the White House.

An administration that would commit to that should be accused of Treason.

Omg! Trump is nuts! McFaul has served our country for many years. He's carried the torch, raised the flag, and stood firmly for the USA. Putin should never receive access to any patriots for any reason. Putin's a monster. Trump's a mobster. Nobody gets access to McFaul! Period.
