The work motivates future efforts – both theoretical and experimental – to investigate the complex interrelations between large-scale brain connectivity, dynamics, and the widespread impacts of stimulation.

While the field has often focused on how structure predicts function, perhaps the most crucial insight from our study is the notion that dynamical organization can also govern how focal stimulation modulates interactions between distributed parts of the brain.

Moreover, the dynamical regime also alters how stimulation-induced changes in the temporal locking of activity between brain areas relates to measures of structural or functional network connectivity.

We extend the mean-field model to incorporate regional stimulation, & study how focal perturbations modulate network dynamics. Our results indicate that system-wide responses to local stimulation differ significantly depending on the collective state of ongoing rhythmic activity.

This approach allows us to tune parameters that control the influence of local oscillations or network interactions on system behavior, and hence move the system between different dynamical regimes.

Here we capitalize on computational modeling to extract principles whereby local perturbations affect brain dynamics. We model large-scale brain regions as Wilson-Cowan neural masses & we couple them with a strength proportional to anatomical connectivity from diffusion MRI.

Thanks to for creating really easy-to-use code for assessing gender balance in your own reference list based on the work from "The extent and drivers of gender imbalance in neuroscience reference lists" .
