Less compelling narrative vs flowery account of half truths is a false dichotomy. It's not either or. Plenty of compelling, truthful, interesting well written papers out there.

What got us into the replication crisis was not 'fanfiction about our data' but journals refusing to publish non novel/negative findings. Anyway shout out to all the researchers writing interesting papers. It makes keeping up with the literature so much nicer.

Without a narrative, data is just a bunch of random, unrelated, often highly derived numbers and some abstract P-values. The narrative is what makes it Science. It's what gives the data its semantic content.

The opposite of 'telling a story' is not to have a bunch of unstructured data, but to show how the data was realistically obtained, what were the drawbacks, the challenges and the type of ideas that led from one step to another, even if the order is diff from what's 'expected'.
