These hats have been pivotal in boosting in numbers of rare species like the peregrine falcon in the USA. A hat was also used to save the Mauritius kestrel from extinction. Conservation in action people!

That is truly fascinating, but I'm curious if this has long term effects on them socially or emotionally. I know some birds bond for years, and seem as married as humans. Are falcons natural sluts?

Yes it does cause issues because they don't want to mate with their own species. It's very challenging to release imprinted animals into the wild because they actively seek out people.

Yes! Most hand raised birds end up imprinting on people. These days conservationists go to great lengths to avoid it - feeding baby birds with bird puppets and similar measures

Why do they want to do it with people's heads, in particular? Wouldn't they normally do it with the bottom half of the other bird?
