Ellen, our Mobile organizer: for people with convictions, voter ID is a huge barrier to the polls. Talking about a woman we helped who was just released from prison. She did not know she was eligible to vote but she was! We helped her! But...
She was experiencing homeless and needed a free voter ID. We sent her to go get one and she was refused. You can use your Costco ID to get a free voter ID in Alabama but they wouldn’t let her use her AL prison ID to get a voter ID.
But we will not be deterred! The SOS will now allow people to use jail IDs to get free voter IDs. In her words: I now have an ID that is about my future, not my past.
We ALSO discovered that Alabama SOS was not accepting jail IDs as photo ID with absentee ballots sent from jail. Eligible to vote in jail but the document the state uses to identify you as a prisoner can’t identify you as a voter.
Ellen will not be deterred! Because of our advocacy, Alabama now accepts jail movement sheets as valid Alabama voter ID.
In Nevada: Registrars requiring people with convictions to turn in proof of completion of sentence to register to vote. But the agencies in charge of those documents don’t distribute them....
We had registered hundreds of voters with past convictions, but would they get registered??
With a lot of advocacy, evidence from the ground, and some collaboration, the Secretary of State ensured that all those voters would be allowed to register and vote even without these mysterious completion of sentence documents.
Had a great conversation about the stellar storytelling and advocacy of Dennis Eckhoff @FeddyGovs “ https://www.vox.com/first-person/2018/10/26/18027734/voting-rights-felon …. How do we lift up more of these voices?
Great brainstorming session about where #restoreyourvote should go next. So many ideas! Any ideas out in the Twitter sphere?
The look on the face of @Run421 hearing abt the batshit dystopia of felony dis admin (e.g. require ppl with fed convictions to get discharge paperwork that doesn’t exist; get docs from the BPP but they don’t answer calls, etc. etc.) would be priceless if not so sad.pic.twitter.com/uSdOW51kjr
