That and the writers/producers hated David Schwimmer after he lead the cast in united solidarity in contract negotiations, since they wanted to get rid of a few of the actors.

For all that David Schwimmer is often disliked by viewers, his castmates and the casts of productions he has directed always seem to love him. Ross was a whiny creepster no matter who played him. David hit the right hangdog note to keep him at least somewhat sympathetic.
