Astoundingly, Tsuge stopped creating manga in 1987. I asked Asakawa-san if he had any idea why a man who was passionate about exploring the boundaries of visual storytelling decided to just quit, and i never got a clear answer. Tsuge the man, like his manga, is a mystery.

I certainly hope that this Tsuge art exhibit at travels to other countries and that the art book gets translated. Both are impeccably presented and are an eye-opening retrospective of this manga legend

In the gallery watching Tsuge looking at his work was other festival guests like Inio Asano, Charles Burns and Hisashi Eguchi. Tsuge is famously reclusive & reportedly uninterested in his acclaim in the world of comics... i wonder if this trip changes that?

Shosuke Tsuge has played a big role in how his father’s work is now available in other languages and his original art is on display at - he apparently painstakingly re-pasted the typesetting in the word balloons that fell off the stored originals - a year of work

Tsuge’s son Shosuke is here at Angouleme along with Asakawa-san, but apparently, even up ‘til the last minute, everyone was not sure that the 83-year old creator would make the trip to . Tsuge was visibly moved to revisit his works like this

According to scholar/editor & curator Mitsuhiro Asakawa, the Tsuge exhibit in is the first time ever that so much of his original work is on display in one place. Not even Japan has had such a show
