What if I told you that, in 2020 and forever, non-binary acceptance is going to require more than you asking my pronouns or sharing yours?

I think my plan for 2020 is to lose whatever “following” I have. It’s highly overrated.

People take the word community too loosely. We’re not actually in community simply because we share identities and online space. Don’t get too familiar with me.

This all feeds into capitalism & new age ideas we have to “earn love.” Work harder. Be this body type. Have this credit score. Capitalism out here gettin checks charging u for something you dont need to pay a dime for. You are worthy of love as you are right now fam. Get over it.

The 600+ million inhabitants of “Latin America” do not share a race, ethnicity, language, religion, political ideology, or truly *anything* that make them, as a group, distinct from the inhabitants of Canada & the US. White nationalists control both the 🇺🇸 and 🇧🇷 at the moment.

One thing about being Black Puerto Rican is that I usually get to see and hear you all discuss Puerto Rico/Ricans and other Latinx folks with disgust, disdain, or fetishization because you don’t know you’re in the company of one.

Non-Black Latina artists and will perform at the Super Bowl today after Black Latinx like declined. As pro-Black Latinx folks, we have to hold up a mirror to our gente when they fail to show solidarity with Black communities.

I want Ky Peterson to receive the support Cyntoia Brown did. I want Juan Evans to be a prominent example of violence against Black and trans bodies. I want Evon Young to appear on lists of murdered trans people. I want people to care about Black trans men.

There is no safety or real solidarity gained in me valuing or placing my Blackness before or above my queer identity. And no honor. That has long been, and remains, the expectation in most conversations, spaces, and movements centering Black progress. Bayard or exile.

With equal love, I want Nigel Shelby remembered like Trayvon Martin. I want the names of Black trans women who have been murdered to be spoken like that of Sandra Bland. And each year I want to believe we’re closer to that intracommunal love and understanding.

Today would’ve been Nigel Shelby’s. 16th birthday. We continue to speak his name and recognize that without freedom, protections, and support for Black LGBTQ folks, especially youth, there can be no real Black progress.
