Conversely, no American should work with a foreign government, to affect a U.S. election and NO ELECTED OFFICIAL should take money from a foreign agent or government. If they do, they should resign and move to that foreign country. You are not wanted.

The stated basis for hostilities was secession. If on day 2 SC had agreed to remain in the union the war would have ended right then.
