THREAD: This is the first presidential election in which I've met 2 candidates from their previous lives. Elizabeth Warren was one of my Harvard Law School professors. Students respected her. Some feared her. She was an old-school practitioner of the Socratic method. /1

The modern mental illness is anxiety. The symptom is inability to fall asleep. The evidence is pills, meditation apps, opioids, and sleep trackers. The causes are oversocialization and overstimulation.

1/ Going into 2020, I put together a manifesto of all the best resources that have helped me on my personal development journey 💪 I asked a group of similar-minded friends to contribute as well. Today its a living doc that is constantly being updated:

Ali told me about “omid” — the Persian word for hope. I gave Ali a hug. His eyes sparkled. I will see you again, my friend. (Full article at link above)

Ali told me about his experience seeking asylum in Greece. It took months just to get a Skype appointment with Greek asylum services. You never knew how long it would take to get to the next step of process. “Time feels like it has stopped,” he said.

Ali and I drew out blueprints for the garden. We lined up planters, sprinklers, a wooden gate. As I got to know Ali, I marveled at his upbeat attitude. This was a man who’d been forced out of his home, separated from family oceans away.

I was there with a group of international aid workers and volunteers. We spent an afternoon painting fences and planting gardens with teenagers from Syria, Iran, Cameroon. We took turns shoveling dirt, planting vegetables, tilling the topsoil. Watering and mulching.

That he hadn’t seen his family in months and didn’t know when he’d see them again. Ali had found a home in Greece at Sindos Community Center. Sindos provides psychosocial rehabilitation and other support services for refugees.

He was a refugee from Iran. His name was Ali. I met him at a refugee center in Greece on a hot summer day. Ali was in his late 30s. He shook my hand warmly. Cracked a few jokes. Meeting him you wouldn’t have guessed he had risked his life to escape Iran.

On Twitter, you can create a productive filter bubble for yourself. • Following writers will improve your writing. • Following chefs will improve your cooking. • Following comedians will make you funnier. For the first time in history, all your mentors live in your pocket.

How to find good ideas: stop using algorithms. No Netflix suggestions. No Spotify Discover Weekly. No Amazon recommendations. Good ideas are the opposite of viral. They’re hidden and obscure. Instead... find your favorite people and follow the people who influenced them.

Listening to PODCASTS vs. listening to MUSIC on daily commute: I recently switched from the former to the latter as an experiment. I feel different - better mood, more creativity. What about you? Does it depend on type of podcast and type of music? Has this been studied?
