Hurricane Michael has left a horrific swath of death, destruction, and increasing desperation. This tragedy demands a response, an outpouring of energy and empathy, equivalent to the dire scale of need.

My thoughts are first and foremost with victims. But to say it's not the time to talk about climate change in the wake of a deadly hurricane is like saying it's not the right time to talk about guns in the wake of a mass shooting. We can't protect ourselves if we ignore reality.

A nation that has a governmental and judicial structure that allows for prolonged minority rule is a nation that challenges its self-identity as a robust democracy. And it's a nation that courts illegitimacy in the eyes of too many of its citizens.

The scope and breadth of the destruction caused by Hurricane Michael, the dangerous and ongoing storm, is a cause for great alarm and sadness. My thoughts are with all those suffering.

Coal miners are proud people, and they should be. Their hard work and sacrifice won wars and powered American industry. Now climate change demands we move to new forms of energy. Demagogues see an opportunity. But all of us should recognize, with empathy, the pain of change.

As if the stakes of the UN climate report needed any extra exclamation points, there's another hurricane bearing down on Florida. Once again, to all those in the path of the storm, stay safe. And to everyone else, how can wa make sure this issue drives national and global policy?

Journalists are under attack, here in the U.S., and especially around the globe. That's because truth and justice are under attack. The courage of women and men refusing to cower in the face of violence and power cannot be highlighted enough. Their deaths cannot go unanswered.

The disappearance of journalist Khashoggi amid evidence of possible murder at hands of Saudi officials in Turkey is a mystery. It demands a thorough examination by US intelligence and a forceful response by Trump Admin which has coddled and condoned Saudi leaders for too long.
