It's only day two of a new political reality in Washington and already there are dozens of new, serious storylines of which to take stock. A news cycle already on turbodrive goes into warpspeed. Hold on to your hats and don't forget to breathe.

That a president of the United States would characterize the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan as a positive is flat wrong and deeply troubling.

Congress is key as we move ever deeper into this period in our nation's history. Whether ours is to continue to be a government of laws and not of men is first, at base, for Congress to decide… and then followed by the American people making the final, decisive judgement.

New Senator Mitt Romney had some very strong words for the President. And the response from the Administration was predictable. Is this a Kabuki dance or a fissure in the monolith of GOP support? Let's see. In Washington, how someone actually votes speaks a lot louder than words.

After pulling through a holiday illness (nothing too serious but something needing attention) I reflect with humility on all those struggling with far worse. My thoughts are with the sick, sorrowful, and afflicted.

So Elizabeth Warren announces she's running. And already judgements come flooding in. Does she have a chance? Will she be a strong candidate? I don't know. Perhaps we should all just wait and see how the narrative unfolds rather than trying to predict what the narrative will be.

In 2018 I saw many rise up for justice, decency and love. I don't minimize the dark forces or the power they wield. But I believe they underestimate those who've joined the fight against mean-spiritedness, cynicism. and the undermining of our civic institutions. Happy New Year.

Another example that we are living in the Theater of the Absurd: Shutting down the government for a wall that Mexico won't pay for, that is really steel slats, now masquerading as a metaphor.

Give Oklahoma credit. They have refused to crumble, have fought back. Odds still long, but miracles do happen. And if anybody can make this one Okie QB Murray might.

It would now take a miracle of Biblical proportions for Oklahoma to beat Alabama. So pundits and bookmakers right: Neither Notre Dame or Oklahoma ever had more than a severe underdog’s chance in the games today.

Clemson just too talented, too fast, too deep for Notre Dame. Now question is whether Alabama will be the same for Oklahoma... or not.
