Today the Emergency Committee recommended that I declare the outbreak in a public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that advice. Now it's time for the international community to show solidarity with the people of DRC, not to isolate them.

We have now passed 2000 cases in . Insecurity continues to hamper the response. Without access to communities, we can’t vaccinate those at risk, treat those infected or trace contacts. But we are determined that we can & will end this outbreak.

That was fast: On May 1, the case count crossed 1500. As of yesterday it was 1600. So much tragedy hidden behind that simple number. Families decimated. Ebola is so cruel.

In response to surging to highest daily levels of outbreak, President removes Ministry of Health as lead. Interesting turn of events—similar to 2013-2016 outbreak in West Africa. Will it make a difference with security challenges?!

Third attack on this Ebola treatment center in Butembo over the past couple months. A Cameroon physician was killed this time. How many attacks before UN/WHO increase level of security at this ETC to prevent such horrific violence from recurring?

As someone else pointed out elsewhere - it took 20 days for the case numbers to go from 500 to 600 in the W African outbreak. It has taken the outbreak 21 days to do the same. I fear that worse is to come - at heightened risk.

The outbreak in is now second largest historically. A sad toll, with too many families losing loved ones. and partners will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with to do whatever it takes to bring the outbreak to an end.
