By the way, both ANCHORMAN movies are pretty sharp in that regard as well — and very funny!pic.twitter.com/csAIDN5Ya2

A funny but also very dark and timely film for the Trump era: OBSERVE AND REPORT: a razor-sharp portrait of an ascendant culture of entitled stupidity and toxic masculinity.pic.twitter.com/hsWX7RpeCd

Another one that has only grown more relevant and timely: Martin Scorsese's hard-hitting THE KING OF COMEDY (1982), about a media-addicted culture getting ready for reality TV.pic.twitter.com/ZMAJCWq40o

Jeez, so many people keep liking this tweet. I'm exhausted!

I also have a category of movies I love even though they are basically indefensible. It includes: * MAN ON FIRE (2004) * XANADU * ROLLER BOOGIE * SUCKER PUNCHpic.twitter.com/sDD2R6m53C

But overall, I've mostly lost the ability to distinguish "good" movies from "bad." I find movies either enjoyable or tedious to watch. That's really the only thing that matters to me.

For instance, I'm not sure if one could/should qualify McG's CHARLIE'S ANGELS: FULL THROTTLE as a "good" movie — but it's constantly surprising, it's got its own vibe, and I'm never bored watching it.pic.twitter.com/aNkP5DxAIH

I have never regretted watching a movie directed by Tony Scott. Even with a weak script and uninspired performances, he brings so much style and energy to the table.pic.twitter.com/eWABIRyuSH

STEP BROTHERS is one of this century's funniest movies. I can't think of a single recent movie that can reduce me to helpless waves of hysterical laughter so completely.pic.twitter.com/MZQvpuY5NE

Movies I misjudged the first time, only to appreciate them fully after a re-watch: * STEP BROTHERS * THE BIG LEBOWSKI * MOONLIGHT * JENNIFER'S BODY * YOUNG ADULT * TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME * PRETTY WOMAN * SHOWGIRLS * STARSHIP TROOPERS * ALIEN3

A few of the scariest movies I know: * TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME * DON'T LOOK NOW * THE BABADOOK * SECONDS * 28 WEEKS LATER... * CARNIVAL OF SOULS * THE LORDS OF SALEM

When asked to name my favorite movie, I often cite John Frankenheimer's SECONDS (1966): because it's a masterpiece (duh!), because it has all the things I love (horror, sci-fi, politics, great cinematography, clever writing), and because not enough people know it.pic.twitter.com/fGwxhrLQlQ

Any movie with a soundtrack composed by Alexandre Desplat is worth watching.

Another 'dumb' comedy that is smart, funny (apart from one singularly bad joke), and warm-hearted: DODGEBALL: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY.pic.twitter.com/mDGP8ENO5g

I guess everyone probably knows this, but every movie shot by Roger Deakins (even the ones directed by Denis Villeneuve) are worth watching.pic.twitter.com/QSfkfVvGlN

The only 21st-century movie franchise that's been more consistently excellent has been MISISON: IMPOSSIBLE.pic.twitter.com/btPOGEGW60

My biggest movie crushes: * Michelle Pfeiffer * young Johnny Depp * Jennifer Connelly * Barbara Stanwyck * Ingrid Bergman * Michael B. Jordanpic.twitter.com/XQIIW0SwbA

I enjoy all movie genres, but horror is my favorite because its primary function is subversion, it's often very funny, it's not afraid to be gross or awkward, and it's usually funny.

A few all-time great horror comedies: * THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN * RE-ANIMATOR * EVIL DEAD II * MURDER PARTY * THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD * YOU'RE NEXT

DR. STRANGELOVE is one of my all-time favorite films — but somehow my favorite Kubrick is (without hesitation) BARRY LYNDON.pic.twitter.com/H02OCDDCcd

ACE IN THE HOLE (1951) is my favorite Billy Wilder movie. It teaches us more about clickbait journalism, fake news, and the cutthroat world of commercial media production than any contemporary movie.

PETE'S DRAGON (2016) is a truly great movie. Merely a matter of time before it is more widely recognized as a modern classic.pic.twitter.com/OigufiqZeb

Another great one is STUART LITTLE. Geena Davis and Hugh Laurie make the best set of parents in any children's movie.pic.twitter.com/ivDCXkHthP
