Players, make your objectives for a game: - As specific as is possible (and as succinct as is possible) - As controllable as is possible (or as close to controllable as is possible) - Phrased positively ("What I want, not what I don't want") Specific, controllable, positive!

Ideas to build players' self-belief: - have them identity playing strengths and character strengths - Help them to use body language purposefully and intentionally - Help them rationalise their language - 'musts' and 'have to's' - Identify short term process goals for quick wins

Effort on the sports pitch or field is less a choice when players: - lack self-belief - are uncertain about responsibilities - experience anxiety - can't shift attention - feel threatened by coaches Effort becomes more of a choice with mental skills & a positive environment

Our nervous system is an old beast. It's designed to intertwine with our environment - to spot opportunity AND the to assess the costs within those opportunities. That's why players need mental skills Today's 'Thought of the Day'

Every team should enjoy a Psychologically Informed Environment (PIE): - all coach conversations consider thoughts, emotions, experiences & personalities of players - psychological safety to make mistakes, to challenge & to express vulnerability - Constant feedback across the team

It may well be that an optimal sporting mindset going into a competitive situation is one that focuses on winning the battle against self. "If I take charge of myself I give myself the best chance to take charge of the opposition". It may be preferential to put mindset first!

Ideas to help players engage in sessions: - Start with a fun game that gets players smiling - Ask players for feedback between activities - Encourage player interaction between reps (feedback huddles) - Set up individual development programmes to promote deliberate practice

👇🏻this! Kind of! Being difficult (low agreeableness) may have relationship with being creative (High openness), but possibly doesn’t. Coaches should be more tolerant with ‘difficult’ players because they’re (probably) just being themselves. The coach has to learn to handle them

Humans are a cocktail of cognitions, emotions, motivations and behaviours interacting. And here's the thing - these driving forces interact in parallel rather than serially....making behavioural choice hard for everyone! Today's 'Thought of the Day'

Jurgen Klopp as an extravert: - expresses enormous amounts of positive emotion - can get very angry - a great amount of social interaction - Popular - Warm - creates a positive social environment (probably) - high levels of social competence (possibly) - Happy (possibly)

Helping players develop optimism: - Reflect on strengths - Eradicate any extreme thoughts around performance (musts & have to's) - Have strategies to deal with negative emotion - Have strategies to deal with poor performance or a high performing opposition - Offer social support

Turn "I must win" into "I'd like to win" Turn "I have to perform" into "It'd be great to perform" Rigid, fixed, and extreme thoughts around sport can feel like the kind of thoughts a competitor should have. This is untrue! Thinking this way will more likely hinder than help...

👇🏻one for cognitive linguists! There are two orientational metaphors in this quote that have implication for mental skills. To show ‘spirit’ = to be above or ‘high’ Pick themselves up = ‘more’ is ‘up’ Good is up; more is up...great body language is up Does that make sense?

Really enjoyed my chats, debates and discourse about ‘attitude’ and ‘difficult players’ with people on Twitter this weekend. It’s not about being ‘right’...it’s about putting ideas out there, having respectful debate, listening to others, learning, creating new thinking tools
