1. There is a big recruiting advantage for the Ivies and other elite colleges in certain fields - Wall Street, Silicon Valley, media, etc. 2. Elite colleges are a status symbol for rich families - you can’t drive a Nissan and you can’t say your kid is going to say, Ohio State.

With a state college education you can get a decent job (used to be true, anyway - maybe not quite so true now, but still, a huge diff from no degree). But if you want to be mover-shaker-elite, or work on Wallstreet, you must go to 1 of these few schools.
