More and more, I'm reminded of a play I'd seen a little under a year ago: THE NETHER by Jennifer Haley. The play is about how society finally catches up with technology and is able to police what happens on the Internet (1/4)https://twitter.com/Pup_Amp/status/1085344587806236672 …
I would disentangle this to a broader picture. The ultra-wealthy have political sway but their intent is usually to benefit themselves financially (which usually results in some form of disenfranchisement). The problem is that they are a small class quantitatively.

Their sway comes from the fact that politicians (regardless of side) want to please them in return for various benefits (donations and less ethical benefits). But now the politicians have a problem that they need more than money, they need votes.

So these politicians turn towards easily charged demographics to generate the votes they need (and then draw gerrymandered borders once they find those groups).

my view of this is different. I don't think the "old curmudgeons with money" are really the problem in this context. They're a problem in a different manner, but really I think the majority of them couldn't give a shit let alone two.
