  2. It’s a very different relationship if you start working together in a formal mentoring arrangement. Informal and formal both have theirs pros and cons. I like mixing them based on whatever makes sense in a given situation.

  3. Also note the difference between “wants them to limit their work in progress” and “limits their work in progress”. Makes a big difference.

Dear fellow programmers, I've you're currently feeling like your passion is being stifled at work, don't try to stick it out alone. Reach out to friends & colleagues.! I've written about my own experience here, maybe it can be of help: Please retweet.

At one point I realized that often the complexity of code / systems is a result of the complexity of people and their interactions. That’s when I understood Conway’s law for the first time. You might enjoy reading “Team topologies”.

If you've got great employees that are doing their best, yet somehow they don't make progress, your company might have a broader, more systematic problem. Don't blame your employees, instead look for the root cause.

Career pro tip: build powerful relationships with your colleagues. No two relationships will look alike, but they can all begin from a mindset of empathy, curiosity and humbleness.

I've participated in projects where the developers only understood the desired outcome on the day they shipped. As a project sponsor, you can easily avoid this situation by organising a lean inception.

And of course, if you can’t possibly endure the situation then by all means try to get out of it as quickly as possible. This is not about proving anything to anyone.

Very true indeed! I would never wish for anyone to have a bad manager in their career! But it was exactly this thought of learning that carried me through the worst moments. Lincoln used to say “and this, too, shall pass away”.

A great way to learn a lot about leadership is to have had a bad manager in the past (what should you not do). If you find yourself in such a situation and you can’t see a way out, maybe you can embrace it as an opportunity for learning.

There’s a bunch of great reasons to bring your developers in right from a project’s inception. Don’t just spec everything out and hand it to them for implementation.

one thing we didn’t quite get right was correcting the fish eye effect. Are there any other materials you can recommend on that topic? Anyway, thanks already for that great book of yours!

A friend and I made this 2.5D game rendering engine last week, pair programming all the way through! It’s been tons of fun and all along we’ve been guided by excellent book on the Wolfenstein 3D engine!

Plus, when you constantly refactor your code, the code itself becomes easier to refactor. By refactoring, you’re making sure you can continue refactoring in the future.
