  1. If someone invites you over for dinner and tells you not to bring anything, and they don’t drink, what do you do? Bring nothing? Ignore them and bring…?

    11) On balance, despite the quirks, I left McGrath Road impressed by what I saw. It shows you can build high-quality, interesting homes, even for a council. Private developers have no excuses to build the dehumanizing crap they do in the face of this.

1/ There's a growing problem in urban housing markets: minimum lot sizes. At the blog I unpack several recent studies exploring this troubling trend.

the bus is the best way around town today the 45 left me waiting for a while, but found so much beauty in the streetscape that it was still pleasurable. We need more buses, more often. Buses are so much more enjoyable than driving or taking a lyft

  7. This is really just a terrible system.

  8. This wasn’t always the case. LA is full of little apartment buildings (dingbats) b/c small scale people built them one by one. But now it’s nearly impossible to do that. So big developers spend massive $$ to overcome these hurdles, then charge premium rates to recoup the costs.

  9. Then I thought “ok, I’ll build an ADU in my yard instead.” My city (SLC) has an ADU ordinance, so I assumed it would work. Then I read the ADU ordinance and learned various sorts of requirements like setbacks also made that impossible.

  10. Big developers have the resources to work through zoning changes, but it was impossible for me — someone with the will and the resources — to build a duplex.

  11. I've known that in a hypothetical sense for a long time, but saw it first hand last year when wondered if I could actually build a duplex. I was going to use the equity in my house to fund it (so I had the $$) but all the land that’s being developed is zoned for single family

  12. I agree, with the caveat that it’s less about what developers want to do & more what they’re allowed to do. For example, most cities make it nearly impossible to build small scale multifamily housing. And when it can be done, the requirements are so onerous that it doesnt pencil

  15. Good video here on the reasons hitchhiking has nearly died out in the US. Among other things, turns out it’s not much more dangerous than just driving generally, though police and the FBI actively tried to make it seem dangerous

  16. Mormonism, and especially BYU, are worthy subjects for hard hitting and at times critical reporting. ( won a Pulitzer doing just that). But sloppy work like this does no one any good.

  17. The author seems to have been aware that there is a large community of Mormon feminists, but made apparently no effort to include their voices beyond aggregating old content. Similarly, why are there no voices from BYU in a price that begins with a discussion o of BYU?

One sad thing about no one walking. Our extremely car-centric transportation systems contribute to social alienation and Isolation. Making all trips in cars eliminates the prospects for chance encounters with people who are different from you.
