Today is the winter solstice! The winter solstice is the day with the shortest period of daylight and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. You’ll also notice that the sun is at its lowest elevation.

Detroit native Ralph Bunche became the first African American to receive the Nobel Peace Prize on this day in 1950. He received the Prize for having arranged a cease-fire between Israelis and Arabs during the war which followed the creation of the state of Israel in 1948.

Slavery was officially abolished in the United States with the ratification of the 13th Amendment on December 6, 1865. Michigan Senator Jacob M. Howard worked closely with President Lincoln to draft the Amendment.

This year’s official state Christmas Tree is from St. Johns, just north of Lansing. The tree arrived in Lansing on October 39 and is almost ready to be lit tomorrow night!

On this day in 1796, the American flag was flown over Michigan for the first time. U.S. regulars under the command of Lt. Colonel John F. Hamtramck entered Detroit and replaced the British Union Jack with the Stars and Stripes.
