This concept is so foreign I've found in tribal societies where there is no reason or incentive to be kind to anyone outside of the family/tribe...i.e. trust (and marry!) no one but family...
Not only is it the case that happy people are more willing to help others, but as I generally point out, helping others is the best way to help yourself, the best way to promote your own happiness. It is you, yourself, who will receive the benefit.

But what you’ve said above is so important; tribal society ideas and beliefs are being reintroduced to the mainstream by social media, which seems to be making some of us close down, instead of open up. It’s an interesting thought ...

Ah yes, I see your point -- no question...and Americans must fight this trend and impulse to become tribal b/c it's impossible to keep and enjoy a strong civil society when concepts like cooperation, trust, & civic responsibility get thrown out the window...

That’s it. Self-awareness (or at least an awareness that societal norms are being endangered) could help reverse the trend. It might already be too late, but the stakes are so high that there’s no other choice but to try. Canaries in the coal mine still saved *some* lives.

In journey of life, at any moment, we always do something consciously or unconsciously. If we r self-centred and sitting silently then also we are doing an act of non-help. When we are doing something at every point of life then why shouldn't we do some loving work for all??
