No idea if this is an unpopular opinion but: Horror games are better when there's little to no combat involved. There are a few exceptions but bashing The Medium for it's puzzle elements and lack of combat seems ridiculous when games like Amnesia have been doing that forever
Some perfect examples of good survival horrors: - The Amnesia games - Layers of Fear - OUTLAST?? HELLOOOO? - FNaF - Visage (Easily one of the best horror puzzlers ever made) - The Dark Pictures Anthology All *fantastic* games without forced combat experiences
Yup, it's just like movies showing monsters too much. Monsters aren't scary. The threat from them is. Silent Hill, and Alien Isolation both have very little I the way of combat, and they're both excellent. Dead space, while a brilliant game, wasn't scary at all.
Yeah, even a big horror game chicken like me (HOW!? I love horror movies why can't I touch horror games!?) played Dead Space! Give me vulnerabilities any day!
Yeah the only horror games I've ever properly felt scared playing are the ones where you feel horribly, crushingly vulnerable - amnesia dark descent and alien isolation spring to mind - I find it harder to feel the tension without a very real prospect of finality for messing up
Bloodborne is an incredible horror game based around entirely on combat. The atmosphere, the setting, the world building and designs are truly things not meant to be seen.
This isn't me saying that combat based horrors are bad, just that we absolutely can't base a poor review on a horror due to 'no combat' when the doms of the genre are purely survival based Otherwise I'd be dissing Evil Within, Resident Evil, Alien: Isolation etc!
