When I worked in hardware (PC repair) customers would frequently asked to be passed to ‘one of the lads’ only for one of the lads to say the same thing I would’ve said. My team were wonderful and amazing. But the off site engineers would give me an AUDIBLE SIGH if I picked up the phone to them but would laugh and joke with my male colleagues. I loved my job but it was hard to be taken seriously.
I’d have customers asking for my number and flirting with me, to the extent that it would become a problem for my colleagues. One man repeatedly called and kept asking for my number and we had to block him, making it difficult to talk to him about his repairs.
Same kind of experience Managing my Game shop. Can I speak to the manager...... . my store was 80% female. My Team knew their stuff!
I'd saved enough money years ago to walk into a PC shop and basically get what I wanted. Because it was a fun experience, I was with my husband Walked in, they ignore me &talk to him, he redirects to me. The guy attitude changed and starts talking down to me.
He's like so you want to Facebook and...? I reply saying I want a PC with x,y,z and he looks at my husband with this dumbfounded look, husband raises his eyebrows at the guy like why you looking at me for. Guy then confirms what I've said, talking about me, to husband like
ugg I feel this in my soul. Being a woman in the IT field is exhausting.
I would have thought "Damn, she knows her stuff", and when someone else asked if I needed help, I'd feel confident in saying "Nope, I'm good, thanks".
