Philosophical Psychology published a paper trumpeting “race science.” Some have called for it to be retracted. I fear (again) a larger backlash against those calling for its retraction is mounting. I hope those who are defending free speech remember ALSO to denounce the paper.

Should we also denounce the work David Reich, the liberal genetics professor at Harvard, who Cofnas approvingly cites? Or the New York Times, which ran an OP ed by him in 2018 defending similar conclusions?

No? Cofnas's paper lists the reasons not to make certain conclusions from eg twin adoption studies (there may be pervasive racism) and then repeats the same arguments anyway, pretending that racism has disappeared. It's just a dumb paper.

Spencer, I didn't think you would go for this drivel - you are way above this. Come on. I refuse to go re-read the Cofnas paper, but I read it in like 2 minutes and he rehearses the familiar objections to the very arguments he ends up endorsing.

As I recall, he ends the section on the "scientific dispute" by pretending that you must appeal to a mysterious "X" to explain why a Black child adopted into a white family would still have an IQ deficit, as if racism doesn't exist in that environment too.

The problem is that Cofnas’ paper doesn’t depend on racism not existing in that environment as well.

Just as much racism exists in that environment. Maybe more!

As I tried to explain earlier, this is a different disagreement. You don’t agree with his assessment about what the environmental model predicts. So you should just take that on first and then argue about whether or not racism has gone up or down.

I was taking that on the whole time - maybe you misunderstand. All these arguments for racism depend on minimizing the environmental effects of racism. Dating back to Hoffman and before.

      1) this paper doesn’t argue for racism anywhere. 2) Take, for arguments sake, the situation where racism is monotonically declining. Do you expect the school performance gaps to increase, decrease, or what? You need to agree on the prediction made by the env model first.

No I don't. I don't need to make any such speculation. That's your thing, not mine. There is a huge amount of systematic structural racism that pervades US society, and it explains gaps. Who knows about what would your thesis about monotonic decline, it's irrelevant.

The Hoffman argument seems to also depend on the env prediction that if racism decreases, then gap X,Y,Z decreases as well.
