There's literally constant arguments over how such "simple" paintings can demand high prices, fueling debate on how we define the value of art. If your class didn't have discussions about the politics of abstract art then it's because you didn't try, not because it doesn't exist.

Gotta love how people's answer to "all art is political" is "oh then THIS is political" while pointing at some abstract nonsense that is only currently in demand because rich people need to launder money or bs like that. Politics of an art piece are not always surface-level
