I'm glad the Prize is standing up for Torrey, I'm really glad other authors are standing up for Torrey, I'm *thrilled* her publisher is standing up for Torrey. But i think we need to talk about this article.https://www.theguardian.com/books/2021/apr/07/womens-prize-condemns-online-attack-on-trans-nominee-torrey-peters-detransition-baby …

The claims the article makes about the actual book go unrebutted and unreplied to (and Twitter has plenty of rebuttals to lift, just as they lifted other responses).

We don't hear from a trans person until literally the very last paragraph of the article. Cis authors? Sure. Other trans authors? No. Torrey herself? Not until the very closing paragraph.

The article quotes the Prize organisers saying: “anyone who is legally defined as a woman can be entered for the prize by a publisher … the word ‘woman’ equates to a cis woman, or a transgender woman who is legally defined as a woman.”

A reminder: legal definition isn't what makes trans women, women, especially as arbitrary barriers and outright impossibility are far more common than trans-friendly legal policies.

A further reminder: in 2019, the Prize longlisted Akwaeke Emezi. If it was under this policy, they longlisted them based not on their gender, but their *assumed legal gender*.

They said at the time they were developing new policies for trans and nonbinary people: have they? If so, they're lying now. If not, they lied then.

And in either case, this current policy is trans-exclusionary, much as it is better than the assigned-sex-at-birth model the letter writers demand.

So: I'm glad Torrey is getting her deserved support in the face of an utterly despicable, undeserved attack. But the publishing world and media need to be doing better.

Women's Prize still works alongside that Chimamanada Adiche Ngozi who is a transphobe. So while it's great about Torrey Peters and their standing up for her. They also still work with people that go against their public message. It just feels so sketchy
