(The semicolon between ) and { should not be there, and results in the contents of the if block being executed unconditionally - it's actually a separate if statement with an empty-body followed by a standalone block that happens to start on the same line)
"if(should_do_the_thing); { do_the_thing(); }" is valid but unfortunate Java syntax. I couldn't figure out what I'd done wrong at all. After staring at the code for a couple of minutes my coworker started laughing hysterically.

Doh sorry, I completely missed the semi colon, I thought the conditional was supposed to be a function missing brackets I do that *all the time* :)
