I aspire to show you that nuanced is not an antonym of clear. Because the public has a right and a duty to understand immigration policy. Now .

Hot off the presses, effective midnight: how to seek asylum in the United States, now in 15(!) steps. immigrationimpact.com/2023/05/11/15- It's really tempting to flowchart-oversimplify this, but it's worth reading this through at least once so you understand what is actually required!

On Thursday, the number of migrants in CBP custody dropped to under 25,000, according to internal data obtained by The Times, after hovering above 28,000 earlier in the week. Government officials said they had not seen an influx of crossings overnight.

This is the real crisis - a humanitarian one. This is in an encampment in Matamoros, you can hear a baby coughing and crying for her mom from inside. These are the conditions that families with small children have to live in until they are lucky enough to get an appt on CBP One

CBP is holding people between the border fences. Outside. Without food. Instead of processing them. These people came before last night. When finally processed, will CBP lie & say they came after transit ban was in place? Will they be barred from asylum due to US’ own cruelty?

We were there today and yesterday delivering food, blankets, diapers and warm clothing. These are human beings who have risked their lives coming to the US in order to ask for protection *as is their right under federal and international law*.

So to be clear, if these folks—who crossed before midnight—are booked after midnight, will they be recorded as “arriving” after midnight and subject to the new transit ban? It SHOULDN’T be that way. But WILL it? We may not know.

Migrants waiting to be picked up by Border Patrol are starting to take blankets and warm clothes left by people before them out of two dumpsters. It’s unclear when federal immigration authorities will take them for processing. #ElPaso

CBP facilities are already overcrowded. DHS is going to be holding some migrants in CBP custody LONGER in order to give them asylum screenings there. There is no world in which this does not exacerbate overcrowding in facilities that really can’t take it. Remember 2019?

The pandemic-era policy known as Title 42 will end tonight and in its place, the Biden administration is promising a crackdown on illegal crossings. To discuss U.S. immigration policy, @IAmAmnaNawaz spoke with @SecBlinken. to.pbs.org/3MzB3rB

Can’t wait to see how this works for every question about immigration ever SERIOUSLY IF YOU WORK IN SEARCH OR AI I NEED TO TALK TO YOU ON BEHALF OF THE POLICY WORLD

Google has unveiled its vision for how it will incorporate AI into search. The quick answer: it's going to gobble up the open web and then summarize/rewrite/regurgitate it (pick the adjective that reflects your level of disquiet) in a shiny google UI theverge.com/2023/5/10/2371

How does the new asylum rule work? Well, back in February, @DLind wrote a great piece explaining How To Seek Asylum (Under Biden’s Proposed Asylum Transit Ban), In 12 Not-At-All-Easy Steps. The final rule is not that different from the proposed rule. immigrationimpact.com/2023/02/22/ste

A thread on our reporting: The Biden administration is planning to replace Title 42 with a policy that is, in many ways, tougher — and I think that has been overlooked. This rule will disqualify most non-Mexican migrants from asylum if they enter the U.S. without permission. 1/

do we know if the transit ban people are being trained on fixed the bits of the NPRM that were massively vague and we were all confused by/disagreeing about? Seems like no substantive change but like “is someone who passes their interview still barred from asylum” seems important

I will say that the fact that every major daily has tasked its reporters with “tell me What This Means For America” rather than “tell me what this means for what will happen” does not make me feel like the job I have now is not in fact a necessary inheritor of the jobs I left

CBP didn’t release details of the enforcement action. But sources told El Paso Matters that migrants without paperwork in two large camps get a short deadline to surrender to Border Patrol, with a likelihood of being released in the United States. elpasomatters.org/2023/05/08/cpb

Longtime Twitter followers will know that a) the Casablanca vs. Maltese Falcon question is fraught in my household but on this timeline we stan Casablanca; b) the best NYE hack ever discovered is to leave a party before midnight car-calling rush, go home, and watch one of them.

If you and everyone you are with have already seen Casablanca I highly recommend the Claude Rains Edit: only the scenes with Claude Rains in them. It’s not necessarily a better movie but it calls attention to some otherwise-easily-neglected delights.

Casablanca works so well because it's about a love triangle but there's also a 4th guy who would sleep with everyone in that love triangle and he is constantly saying some of the greatest lines in movie history.
