The New People’s Army. Now THAT is an army of the masses. One that follows the rules of war, and serves the people.

Half Jest / Half Serious reply: They have a name for that, it’s called a Militia. Things that’ll make you go hmmm.

No, you’re mistaken. that is an army. It currently holds more territory than any “militia” would.

Replying to @npafangirl @DLiamDorris and
I see why you’d think that at first but it is in no way a “militia” but an actual army within a guerrilla stage of combat.

We might have some wires crossed. An army raised by the people for the people is traditionally called a militia. The US tried to evolve militias into what we now know as the national guard.

Am I not mistaken that Militias are significantly smaller and have no centralized governing body to control it? Similar to the people’s partisan units in occupied USSR 1941 or so

Militias usually have rank structure, some more rigid than others. Militias can be as small as a couple dozen people, and be up to several hundred. They are usually built to work in tandem with other militias or standing militaries. A good example is the revolutionary war.

So wait what makes the New People’s Army a militia? It’s got a centralized commanding body of government (the National Democratic front), thousands of members, and actively held red bases of control. It’s still in the Guerrilla stage but that doesn’t mean it’s a militia.

The difference is basically that militias are non professional militarized groups protecting and defending their communities and not nationalized, and don’t *have* to follow military orders. (It a little more complicated, but I am painting a pic in a single tweet.)

The NPA absolutely is required to follow orders of the CPP (Communist Party of the Philippines). It’s not defending a single community but is rather a national army engaged in a war. There are full timers, part timers; like reservists, and *also* local people’s militias
