It has always been a political tool since its inception, used to silence dissent and repress political opponents and others. Presidential candidate Eugene Debs was jailed in 1918 for making a speech protesting WWI. He was sentenced to 10 years and stripped of citizenship. The supreme court upheld this decision. The Esp.
