Why do conservatives refer to "do gooder movements" as if it's a bad thing? How fucked up in the head do you have to be to be OPPOSED to helping people?
Trained to believe in a meritocracy. It's been ingrained in the minds of a plurality that people should help themselves and not others. People who struggle are demonized as lazy, worthless, and so on. Additionally, programed to blame others that struggle for their struggle.
