Europe’s tough new measures — like closing restaurants — appear to be slowing the spread of the virus. In the U.S., restaurants, bars and other indoor spaces largely remain open, and the number of new infections continues to soar.

The bottom line: More testing - especially testing that delivers results immediately, rather than with a lag of a day or two - has the potential to save thousands of American lives in coming months.

“There’s clear evidence that test-and-isolate works,” says. As Jennifer Nuzzo, a Johns Hopkins epidemiologist, puts it, “It can make a big difference, provided it’s coupled with other things.” The University of Illinois is one example. (4/ x)

If Americans could take a test whenever they wanted to, it would significantly cut down on virus outbreaks. No, the tests aren't perfect. But they don't need to be to have a profound effect. They just need to be better than the complete ignorance many people now have. (3/x)

Masks and distancing are both vital. But so is an expansion of testing -- especially rapid-result testing, as has argued. (2/x)

Reducing the spread of Covid-19 over the next several months — while vaccines are being distributed — has the potential to save more than 100,000 American lives. (More detail on that in the link.) So how can we reduce the spread? (1/x)

"A vaccine is like a fire hose. A vaccine that’s 95 percent effective, as Moderna’s and Pfizer’s versions appear to be, is a powerful fire hose. But the size of a fire is still a bigger determinant of how much destruction occurs."

Allowing the virus to spread as rapidly as it’s now spreading in the U.S. is akin to reducing the vaccine’s effectiveness rate from 95% to well below 50%.

As puts it, the vaccine is like a fire hose but covid19 in the US is now like an uncontrolled wildfire. I’d add, wearing a mask and social distancing is like rain!

GA polls were more accurate than most in November, but a presidential electorate is exponentially easier to model for than a Senate double-header on the first Tuesday in January. Basically 🤷🏻‍♂️.

+1 A lot of private pollsters are claiming their unreleased polls were more accurate than the public polls. Be skeptical. If so, why did Biden campaign in Iowa and Ohio in the final days? Why did Trump abandon Mich. and Wisc.? Why were so many D and R House campaigns shocked?

Final thought: Some progressives claim affirmative action lost in California because of the initiative's wording. This is almost certainly wrong. Affirmative action has now lost in state after state over the last 25 years. Focusing on CA specifics feels like wishful thinking.
