The new Perth museum addition is an environmental disaster. They're publicly admitting they couldn't improve on the 1891 design, so just added a hideous cube. Why do we have to build like this? Are they joking? I thought of and quietly screamed on the inside.

The latest episode of the portal with and is remarkable. What a gift and privilege to hear that story, thank you. We're lucky to have you both among us. But if that we're my field I'd be livid; instead I can only look on in impotent disbelief.

The only other problem with economics is that not only is it wrong but also incredibly imaginatively limiting. People are seen as completely one dimensional who can only be motivated by bribes or hindered by fines.

What silicon valley is largely now doing, without anyone really asking them to, is replacing services we love and cherish with inferior automated counterparts

Among the worst things about social media is this: the demonstration that a societies experts are like you: morons. Except for a very narrow edge, morons. The damage this does to their own field can not be undone. With their credibility goes civilisation.

We've stubbed our toes on risk quantification and now can't iterate our way out of our present problems

Honestly , is completely right here; you should just have conversations with your wife on your podcast. It's better than good.

Like good art, good engineering shows us how difficult it is to be objective by showing us how different the world looks under an objective vision, where as bad art (engineering) are the familiar rat-runs of a selfish day dream.

It's ok not to like modern art. It’s extremely hard to learn to like unlikeable things — but that’s not to those things’ credit. Maybe I have my preferences; the art world has its, No?

Sometimes the internet is wonderful: If one looks one is able to find an elegant proof of superpermutation (hitherto unknown) in unlikely places like 4chan. Link:

So some beliefs intersect with reality and others do not.

Of course here they show the authors can film a houseplant and then reconstruct a three-dimensional image of the rest of the room from the disparate shadows cast by the plant’s leaves.

This captivating paper shows that the changing light on the wall of a room, filmed with nothing fancier than an iPhone, can be processed to reveal the scene outside the window.

If you put chalk under a powerful microscope—white cliffs of Dover type chalk, not the modern blackboard variety—you will see something like this Because it's not just a rock. It's an accumulation of ancient skeletons: the armored husks of single-celled, ocean-dwelling plankton
