It's going to be very difficult to obtain a two-thirds majority if both the House and Senate to amend the constitution, replacing the electoral college, unifying opponents of the EC behind a single alternative.

Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico are not exactly outstanding examples of enduring democracy and rule of law. And prime minister in the others is selected by parliament, not the people. Also no mention of unitary regimes like UK, France, Spain, Italy, Japan.
