For weeks, Shanghai's lockdown and China's pursuit of COVID Zero without our mRNA vaccines has been one of the strangest, most bewildering news mysteries in the world. Dan does an amazing job providing context to make the incomprehensible slightly more comprehensible in this ep.

One thing this ep made clear to me is that, beyond China's real interest in limiting spread, official COVID death counts have became a global scoreboard for Xi to defend his regime and discredit the decadence of the west and its liberal democracies

No, the Chinese official COVID data is not remotely credible. But the fact that the data is so in-credible is another sign of China's extraordinary and outwardly bizarre attempts to prove that COVID Zero is both desirable and possible.

In the latest ep of Plain English, @danwwang breaks down a mystery best summarized in two images: 1) China has brutally locked down its richest and biggest city... 2) ... to stop a COVID outbreak that has "officially" killed exactly zero people. open.spotify.com/episode/7m2LzK

Excellent conversation between two of my favorite writers! I appreciate Dan’s insights because my mother is under lockdown rn and I hope more people can see what is actually happening and WHY. Thank you Derek and Dan for this personally important conversation.

I have to speak up. Your portrayal of Shanghai is so wrong, skewed, and misinformed. I live here and for the 25.9 other people who do live here, we are getting through the lockdown with out much incident. It's your portrayal that is perverse
