Hospitalizations are up 100% since the end of May in Texas. https://www.texastribune.org/2020/06/22/texas-coronavirus-cases-hospitalizations-austin-houston-dallas/ … Doctors say the new cases are more likely to be under 50: "Younger people [are] requiring hospitalization and younger people who are now requiring ICU."pic.twitter.com/hFaSF8Imyl

This is not an apples-to-apples comparison, but a telling indicator about how COVID's current stage is attacking younger ppl: In March, 82% of those hospitalized in NYC were over 45. https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/doh/downloads/pdf/imm/covid-19-hospitalized-by-age.pdf … Today's, 50% of those hospitalized in Dallas hospitals are under 50.pic.twitter.com/POc7KiX9O8

The declining median age of COVID patients is a critical story. Some of it is a statistical result of expanded testing—that's important. https://twitter.com/ScottGottliebMD/status/1275074495464607751?s=20 … But you don't get a sudden doubling of hospitalizations led by younger Texans just by administering more tests.

Median age of new Covid cases in outbreak states continues to decline. In Florida, median age fell from 65 in March to 35 last week. Some of trend reflects testing moving away from hospitals (where older individuals are more likely to present) and into community. h/t @DKThomp pic.twitter.com/DTa2YudCN2

The most important COVID story right now is the age shift. In Texas: Young adults driving the spike. https://www.texastribune.org/2020/06/16/texas-coronavirus-spike-young-adults/ … In Arizona: COVID cases growing 2X faster among ages 20-44 than 65+. In Florida: Median age of new COVID cases fell from 65 in March to 35 this week —> pic.twitter.com/UOcaeMN0fx

Young people go out more. They meet more people, and hangout in crowded place. They think the virus only affects the elderly, so they don’t wear masks. I think that we’ll see the elderly get infected soon. It is impossible to keep only part of the population safe.

If they didn't get tested, they wouldn't know they needed to go to the hospital.
