Looking through the replies, I'm guessing that a drastically lengthened half life for 239 over 238 means that it won't come across as a 'red hot' substance..?

There's about 12.5% Pu-239 in there as well, because the Pu238 already bred does care that it isn't supposed to absorb any more neutrons. It's a compromise between getting cleaner Pu-238 and having to reprocess more batches of irradiated Np-237 samples.
