I believe female actors can play men and trans men. That is the apparently controversial view that inspired BI to take down my piece. I have resigned from @businessinsider and explain why in my letter to EIC @nichcarlsonpic.twitter.com/5G2UZggXi9

Which roles do you think trans people will get to play if all of the trans roles are played by cis actors? Hollywood actors love to play trans and disabled characters because cis and abled people get this WOW moment when they see their famous fave transformed so ‘convincingly’...

but it’s not convincing at all to trans & disabled audiences. See, our communities are not the audience for these films. Cis & abled people are. It’s an enjoyably shocking spectacle where they get to enjoy seeing someone like themselves be someone like us.

These actors have always had acclaim and awards, and that’s changing. It makes people uncomfortable to hear trans and disabled people demanding to be considered as actors and as audiences. We want to have a go at playing ourselves for once.

And who would be more convincing? More authentic? Why shouldn’t actors from the trans and disabled communities get work, build up a body of work, become well known, win awards and acclaim? Otherwise we end up missing from the story of our own lives, over & over again.

I’m disabled and I’m sick of seeing other people win awards for doing a terrible job of cripping up. I stand with trans people who are sick of cis people pretending to be them. Listening to our communities might make you uncomfortable but we’re not going to be quiet anymore.

If you believe our communities should get to be famous actors and happy audiences, listen to us, back us up, and don’t see these movies. The fastest way to make Hollywood change is by taking away the money they make from telling our stories as spectacles.

Ever think that maybe an able bodied/cis actor was chosen because they were simply a better and more popular actor and therefore more likely to attract a bigger audience and make the film a success?

How do actors become popular? They get cast. They build profile. There are hardly any disabled and trans characters written, and when they are trans and disabled actors aren’t sought, auditioned or cast.

This is not about whether or not an actor can act, but a matter of visibility and perception. By casting a woman as a trans man, the public perception of a trans man *actually* being a woman is continued. On top of that, it denigrates diversity in Hollywood

There are substantial differences between men and trans men. Men don’t require surgery, never suffer from body dysmorphia, and generally don’t have a problem convincing people of their gender. Trans men do, it’s a totally different experience.

the fact that you say things like "body dysmorphia" shows your lack of understanding. I am not interested in your opinion of trans identities. Medical organisations and scientists back up what the trans community have been saying for years

Stick to your guns and don't let the group-think establishment police your thought. You are now being bullied, vilified, and mocked for your beliefs. Free speech is vital, even if it is something we don't like to hear.

If we follow the "logic" of the upset people, a single actor can't play a married one, an Englishman can't pretend to be an American, and an actor who's lost in the kitchen can't impersonate a famous chef.
