    Floral ambush. Two petal-colored assassin bugs (Phymata) wait in the flower's margins, then pounce when the fly lands. Needlemouth death follows, life sucked out while the victim is pinned on a bed of pollen. Of 100 sunflowers here, 20 have ambush bugs. Bad odds, pollinators.

    Optunia gastronomy. Prickly pear, deneedled and grilled. Palate = lime tang, cucumber bite, hint of okra's ooze. The asparagus of the desert.

    Breakfast of sunshine. Helianthus petals munched down by grasshopper (Melanoplus?). Every other flower in this meadow had been mandible-mown.
