“It’s like cancer. If the cancer doesn’t go away, do we stop giving them chemotherapy? If their diabetes is uncontrolled, do we stop giving them insulin? Of course we don’t.”

Kudos to the great Camden Coalition for their continued work to improve outcomes for people too often overlooked, and for their courage in subjecting their work to rigorous evaluation and transparency. We can all benefit from this.

As important as various healthcare services and strategies such as “hotspotting” are for people, desired results won’t be achieved in cases where people remain homeless. As Dr. Brenner said, “We’re coordinating to nowhere, essentially.”

This article and the study it is about show again that “treatment” often isn’t the answer for people with complex conditions and complicated lives. Housing is most important for people who don’t have it.

"What are the solutions? The bottom line is that we need to house everyone, and get those in crisis the help that they need...greater law enforcement presence may help address some of the symptoms, but the underlying causes of the problem will remain." -

Thanks to the Governor for bold proposals to alleviate homelessness. No doubt it’s a rainy day. We especially appreciate the recognition of as the long-term solutions for people with the highest needs. This is a good start!

Very proud of Dr. Simha Reddy for receiving the American Public Health Association (APHA) Caucus on Homelessness Clinician Award! We’re a month late in our Twitter congratulations, but we promise his colleagues were very prompt with handshakes and slaps on the back.

There remains much to improve and much to learn. Our commitment is to do both. to everyone who helps us do what we do, but especially our dedicated staff and the clients who allow us to share in their lives.

We know that the criminal system has in it, and so using the results from that system to tell us who not to serve would only perpetuate inequity. So we don’t do it. Results showed the same housing outcomes for people with criminal records as those without. /24
