.@chesaboudin People released from jail/prison owe an average of $13k in court/carceral fines and fees. How do we eliminate those fees so they don’t return with debt, making it even harder to rebuild their lives? @Greenlining #WeTheFuture2020

Really important issue. In May 2018, San Francisco became the first county in the nation to pass legislation to eliminate administrative fees charged to people exiting the criminal justice system. Read about how we did it here:https://sfgov.org/financialjustice/reports/criminal-justice-fees-high-pain-people-low-gain-government …

We can start by passing
@HollyJMitchell SB144 - Families Over Fees Act - which eliminates a host of criminal administrative fees statewide.#DebtFreeJustice@CaDebtJustice1 reply 0 retweets 4 likes -
Replying to @InsightCCED @DDerbigny and
Definitely need state legislation too - what we did in SF was focused on local fines/fees. The other thing people often forget is that the crushing fines/fees imposed by the government actually prevent victims from obtaining restitution they are owed.

Yes! We must prioritize preventing unjust incarceration, ending money bail, and continuing to reduce the prison population beyond this crisis. You’ve demonstrated that it can be done.
