this is a v important tweet by Gergely. shout out all the real sw *engineers* working on complex systems. the energy (brain power) many engineers expend in a single day is greater than the lifetime brain power in finance/banking/consulting/politics. not to mention skin in game.

I take back my phrasing of “experienced software engineer”. An experienced sw engineer would work through complex systems like the one at Twitter, b/c they live and breathe taming complexity. “Experienced programmer” or “experienced hacker” would have described George better.

the more time i spend coding, the less interest i have in capital allocation - just find it boring as hell now - essentially (and respectfully) glorified admin. men are at their happiest when they're building something. software, skills, and physique.

the first 2-3 yrs of a skill/job just sucks until u get smooth. ur competence then leads to confidence. most ppl stay in same field forever so they feel good by confidence growing exponentially, but they're blinded by the fact that not actually growing by not learning new things

pod w Edward Thorp aged 90, said he looks so good due to running marathons since his 40s. at 90 he looks better than Ripp (aged ~65). at some point u have to make tradeoffs. in a couple years i'll probably give up strength (5x5) & go 10+ rep range + marathons too
