Hilversum has a population of 90,000 people, which makes it smaller than Watford, St Helens or Crawley

"A couple of decades ago, it was perfectly normal to smoke cigarettes inside. I think it’s the same with cars in the city centre – one day, we will look back and ask ourselves why we ever thought that was a good idea."

We need to get more people walking and cycling because a) air quality issues mean we all lose a year of life b) health issues mean the innactive lose ten years of life c) climate emergency means if we don't decarbonise we all die

The popular assumption is that 'cyclist' must mean 'able bodied'. That has awful consequences for people who rely on a cycle as a mobility aid

  9. Exhibition Road really is a shithole. Very nearly got knocked off my bike by a speeding black cab driver. Why is through traffic even allowed here?

In 1950 there were 2.5 million cars on UK roads – there are now 32.5 million. Thanks to pushback in places like York, Brighton and Birmingham, we may have hit 'peak car'

“Humans make errors and willingly or unwillingly break rules. This is a given that cannot be changed. So streets should be designed in such a way that this natural human behaviour does not lead to crashes and injuries.” - Dutch Institute for Road Safety

"on January 11 a car hit a shop opposite the planter. The circumstances of that crash are not clear but residents & traders are blaming the planter" Nothing at all to do with the motorist, who was completely in control as they drove through a shop window.

“There is no special Low Countries gene which makes people there more inclined to cycling… Cycling is prioritised there because a decision was made in the Sixties. There is absolutely no reason that same decision can’t be made here.”

Imagine if residential kerbside space in London was primarily dedicated to cycle parking (with cheap, plentiful permits, or even free), and to get one of the few residential car parking spaces (if your street even had any), you had to put your name down on a long list and wait.

If we can spend 1.5b on a single junction in Bedford to speed up car journeys, surely we can invest the same to give a whole City Region the option not to drive. As the PM said whilst Mayor about his cycling network “I only wish I’d done it sooner”

Many older people with painful hip joints can't walk but can cycle. Absence of cycle lanes is cruel to the elderly.

The Dutch are the world-leaders of combining bicycle and train trips: 40% of rail commuters use bicycles to get to stations. This system relies on secure, high-volume bike parking at train stations and a rail-focused bicycle share system called OV-fiets.
