"More complicated" translates as "yeah you got me but I've worked out an excuse". Right?
‘Hits back’ is a rather generous description.

What matters is whether or not they have enough horse sense to tell the difference between taking a risk and doing something stupid. Their level of respectability gives them no special wisdom, license, or right. That’s not science.
I’ve been on the receiving end of this attitude I n academia. Just give us the money. It’s too complicated for you to understand. We don’t have time to explain. My own opinion is that the origin is known.
It doesn't matter if the Chinese scientists were well respected. Their government can force a change of behavior and they can't do or say anything against that.
