You are a cell in civilization’s body. Unlike you, civilization does not greatly transcend the understanding of a single individual—in the not-so-distant past, it was even possible for a human to wrap their head around most of it. But like life, civilizations evolve.

Just as our own consciousness is not unitary, but is the epiphenomon of many entities interacting, so too with groups of us, ‘civilization’ at any stage. We or civilization do not have an overall goal independent of the parts that are alive at any given moment, even now.

The resulting shape may become elegant, and could be admired from outside, but to speak of a goal we must remind ourselves of the determinism implicit in ‘choices’ at every level. The aggregate ‘me’ wants life to play across the universe forever, & enjoy it, deterministic or no.
