You are a cell in civilization’s body. Unlike you, civilization does not greatly transcend the understanding of a single individual—in the not-so-distant past, it was even possible for a human to wrap their head around most of it. But like life, civilizations evolve.

And do you think civilization will care for you as an individual? More likely, it will notice our births and deaths as much as you notice the turnover of your epithelial cells. To what ill ends will it use us?

Will our civilization be a good civilization, or evil? Do we individuals have the capacity to understand what that means? Will you or your culture one day, unknowingly, become a cancer, to be dispassionately removed by civilization’s surgeon? Will our civilization commit suicide?
