Agreed. Tom Wolfe's The Painted Word reveals how a small, but powerful, group of people are the nominal gatekeepers- they sell the public on which art is good/trendy/worth collecting.

Tom has a highly narrowed view of what is or can be art. It may not be much of a stretch to call carefully curated living room furniture "art". The context is far broader than most people give credence.
