This is my fundamental issue with serial TV that attempts overarching plots but won't commit to them. You're asking for the audience's trust that you're giving them a beginning, middle and end, then promptly begin to betray that trust with an interminable, infinite middle.

If the audience gets a last act, it's a half hearted one hurriedly put together when the writers discover cancellation is imminent.
