Never forget that Frances Yates, author of The Art of Memory, admits in her book that she has never actually tried any of the techniques she devoted years of her life to studying.

Throughout the book she claims it’s impossible to understand why the Greeks insisted on certain techniques, while in Moonwalking with Einstein the reasons are assumed to be obvious. There’s a lesson here about theory and practice.

Also a lesson about how you can’t trust secondary sources, even if they’re considered the best (and *especially* if they’re the only) book in the field.
