It may well do if it can make money from them, and we don't manage to turn popular consciousness to our side. But that's the point of protest - to awaken and mobilise others, and to test and refine our own understanding of the obstacles we face. This really should be self-evident

Yes, my whole effort in this area is to refine understanding: there is no factual basis to the shortcut taken between extinctions & climate skipping all in between:https://twitter.com/robinmonotti/status/1125987713340051456?s=19 …

There's a difference between being right and being smart. Climate might rank 7th, but it's both the most all-encompassing and lethal of the threats we face and the one that most clearly illustrates the systemic nature of the problem with capitalism and our model of consumption

Or maybe it's simply the one one corporate backed protests are being directed to in order to propose false solutions to profit financially from (carbon capture & storage, carbon offsetting & accounting, directing public money to privately owned renewable energy, mineral mining)

Ok. So what alternative are you proposing? Shutting down the school strikes, telling Extinction Rebellion activists to stay home?

I am not proposing that. I am critical on the official XR's blind faith in the words "net zero". I am in favour of the conservation of primary/intact forests & land rights of indigenous people living in/near them as the main key to reducing climate change.https://twitter.com/robinmonotti/status/1123987172636418049 …

Hang on. I didn't start this thread. I was criticised for an article that stated protest is our only tool and that we need to nurture it, be aware of cooption dangers, learn from our mistakes, refine our goals. If you'd all like to focus on that argument, we can stop wasting time

all of which we agree on-but your tweet that introduced the thread went further: "what we need now is real populism - of Extinction Rebellion, of Greta Thunberg and the school strikes, of a Green New Deal" the question is, do these corporate labels represent real populism?

What we need is not to expect anyone else close to vested interests (Greta, XR, Green New Deal) to give us (false) ready-made solutions but do our own research & argue for the solutions most likely to make a real not illusory impact based on environmental history, facts, science.

So what is your argument? Shut down the schools strikes, ostracise Greta Thunberg, tell Extinction Rebellion activists to go home? Where's the strategy? This is little more than navel-gazing

"shutting down," "ostracising" etc. are the tactics of Roger Hallam & NGO élites of XR et al. the strategy has to do derive from a shared critical understanding; if that is missing, then we are falling into the trap of the XR cynics, as described here:http://www.wrongkindofgreen.org/2019/05/06/extinction-rebellion-training-or-how-to-control-radical-resistance-from-the-obstructive-left/ …

And that will happen through growing engagement, confrontation, mounting struggle, refinement of goals. You want the right answer before most people are aware that the question has even been asked. You need allies, not a cult
