The whole Molly McKew/@Georgetown thing kinda exposes how “Russia studies” is a bit of a racket (ditto liberal arts degrees in general). $00,000’s & years of attendance for what? It’d be cheaper (& more satisfying) to just move to Russia for a few years & study it first hand?

There's a big difference - for the elites, having students at Georgetown allows them to disseminate the "right" information about Russia. Worst thing is to see students develop a genuine understanding of Russia's culture, right?

students don't go to schools like Georgetown to learn about Russia, they go there to learn how to play the game and meet the people who will help them play it. success in DC depends on not knowing many things, & on not saying what one does know about power (emperor's new clothes)
